Sand Hill United Methodist Church - Reno, OH |

|
Sand Hill United Methodist Church owes its existence to long time Sand Hill residents and neighbors George Posey, William Thornriley and Rinaldo Thornriley. George set aside a small track of land located at the junction of Cornerville and Yankeeburg for the church. William and his son took responsibility for the carpentry and construction of the original building. Prior to the construction, meetings were held at various homes in the community or the nearby Marietta Township School. Sand Hill Methodist Episcopal Church held it’s first service in the in the uncompleted building on February 11, 1872. On November 18, 1900 the church was rededicated, having been extensively remodeled due to the growth of the congregation. Services continued for over a century with no other significant expansion of the Sanctuary. The 1950’s were a busy decade for the church. In 1958, a well was drilled which provided running water. Excavation of the basement, an inside stairway to the Sanctuary, restrooms and a new furnace were also added. In 1963 and 1964 the Sanctuary was remodeled with indirect lighting through a cross in the ceiling tiles, the alter was redesigned with kneeling benches and new flooring. During 1967 & 1968 the Education Building (now the Sand Hill Child Care Center) was completed. In 1970 Sand Hill Church became a 2 point charge with Hills Church. In 1980 the current parsonage on Brant Drive was purchased. In 1986, Sand Hill and Hills separated with Sand Hill having a full-time minister for the first time. In 1995, the Sanctuary was repainted, carpeted, and a new sound system was installed. In 1997, the 125th anniversary of the church was attended by Bishop Keaton and District Superintendent Richard Smith. An all-day service of song and fellowship was held, and an historical marker and time capsule were put in place. In 2003, the church underwent the largest expansion of the previous 100 years. The Sanctuary was dramatically enlarged, a balcony was added and the Fellowship Hall in the basement was enlarged, expanded and remodeled. Through the years Sand Hill Church remains a landmark of the community and with God’s help we will continue to move “Forward with Faith”. |
